The story takes place in 431 BC during the Peloponnesian War. The game revolves around Alexios (or Cassandra, depending on the game's choice), a Spartan mercenary who represents both sides of the war, Sparta and Athens, in order to achieve victory. The mercenary is related to the legendary Greek warrior Leonidas, and we learn about his childhood and his search for family members. We meet several historical figures, such as Socrates, his student Plato, the historian Herodotus, and the Athenian leaders Cleon and Pericles, among others, whose characters in the game are based on real history. The game also touches on Greek mythology and legends.
