Description: John wakes up in a bed in a military hospital, but has no memory of how he got there or who he is (before he learns his name, the game calls him Patient JV-034). He manages to escape from his room using telekinesis, which he is mysteriously able to use on the door. He also learns to heal himself. John tries to find his file in the hospital, but then begins experiencing vivid memories of what happened to him six months ago. One of these memories is of a military training course in Bremen, Germany (this serves as a training mission for the player).
A mission six months ago took him to Russia with a small squad called WinterICE, with orders to find out why a Russian scientist, presumed dead, was seeking asylum in America. This scientist—Professor Viktor Grinko—was presumed dead after being accused of helping the Germans conduct paranormal experiments on prisoners of war during the war. When the Red Army stormed the POW camp, he was declared dead. However, after the war, Stalin initiated a project with the same goal as the Germans, and the project leader was a man named Grinko. This project, codenamed "Zener," was based in the village of Dobrynsk. John was chosen to serve as the task force's civilian escort after a recommendation from a psychic named Jane Wilde, who was also accompanying the squad. John is skeptical of Jane's vision, but agrees to the trip.
