The story's protagonist
, Talion, is a ranger in the kingdom of Gondor, responsible for protecting the Black Gate of Mordor. He and his family are killed by Sauron's army, but Talion is revived with wraith-like abilities and heads directly to Mordor to seek revenge. There, he meets Gollum and discovers that they have much in common. Talion also discovers that the wraith who brought him back to life is Cl'brimbor, the greatest Master Blacksmith and Ringmaker, who also seeks revenge on Sauron.
