There is a wooden house standing deep in the forest. A lonely man lives there. Lately, the house has been receiving visits from unusual guests who knock on the window shutters, inviting the hermit to participate in a game of hide-and-seek. The condition for winning is simple: you must survive and keep your sanity until sunrise. This means that approaching the visitors directly could be a very bad idea. There is an unusual cabin deep in the forest. It has served as a laboratory and a dwelling for three generations of guests. But recently, the latest guest has begun to notice strange changes in the familiar surroundings; objects are missing, voices and noises are heard. Something strange is emerging from the forest. When night falls, it seems that someone has made themselves at home in the shadows of rooms, attics, and cellars. You need to stay awake and sane until dawn. The guest wanders through the rooms, avoiding the unknown, counting the minutes until morning. But only at night can he solve the main mystery and find the answers. What is happening? Are the guests real, or are they just figments of his sleepless imagination? What happened to the forest? What is happening to the cabin? Is there a line between reality and fiction? In late November 2011, a strange and disturbing incident occurred in our studios. We received an anonymous email suggesting that we produce an “unorthodox” game based on the material attached to the letter. Such offers are numerous and often merit no attention at all; however, this one seemed to be something entirely different. The attachments contained a collection of 19 files added to an archive titled “lestplay.” The files (text snippets, pieces of audio recordings, fragments of video footage), as well as the tone and phraseology of the letter itself, seemed deeply disturbing. A superficial examination didn’t reveal anything directly frightening; however, we couldn’t escape the feeling that something truly sinister was lurking beneath the surface. The stranger was pleading with us to complete the project he’d started, but he also made us acutely aware of the dangers we were taking, as the proposed situation might explain the disaster that befell the person who had collected the ominous archive, pushing us to the same fate. The anonymous author was a learned man—he said he wouldn't set any limits on our creative freedom, but insisted that the items that make up the "lestplay" archive must be included in the game, "otherwise the whole thing would be absurd." Along with a great many others, we tend to give a certain amount of credence to mysticism, but this specific case seemed more like a kind of cheap camouflage. We were tired of the sheer number of "cursed files" tricks and at times felt inclined to erase everything forever. However, after thinking, we decided to participate in this experiment. At least we would find out what the outcome would be, and what terrible fate might await us, since we would, of course, be the first to play the game. -Hide!
