The game takes place in the year 2187, one year after its predecessor, Guilty Gear 2: Overture. Starting with the game's story, the first part in Arcade mode is set through each character's story, focusing on the "Ramlethal Valentine" arc, while the second part of the story is set after the Arcade mode story on the various platform versions, focusing on the capture of Ramlethal Valentine in the "Meeting and Justice" arc, and also serves as the start of the "Elphelt Valentine" arc in the final chapter.
