WCW vs. the World (known in Japan as Virtual Pro-Wrestling) is a professional wrestling video game released in 1997 for the PlayStation. It was the first game developed by The Man Breeze (later AKI Corporation) to be released outside of
Japan, and the second in the wrestling game series for the PlayStation, after Power Move Pro Wrestling. WCW vs. the World is the first title in the Japanese Virtual Pro-Wrestling series and the first world championship wrestling video game released during its rise amidst the Monday Night Wars. It is one of the original wrestling games for the Sony PlayStation. It is the second title created, after Power Move Pro Wrestling. The game features a diverse cast of characters from all over the world. There are 15 WCW superstars (superstars at the time the game was created, anyway) and 60 wrestlers under pseudonyms in the game. These wrestlers are from all over the world, many from Japan, and some even from the WWF. They are not under their real names because THQ did not own the copyright to them. The game itself consists of several modes. You control one wrestler at a time and can participate in any of the following: League Challenge, fighting for the belt in a league; Best of Seven, choosing seven opponents and fighting for a new belt; Exhibition, choosing any wrestlers and fighting; Elimination, choosing five wrestlers each, with the winner surviving; Tournament, choosing up to eight wrestlers and fighting; League, a round-robin tournament, with the winner being the wrestler with the most points; and Double Title, two wrestlers fight, with the winner winning both belts. The game features 51 wrestlers. In addition to the WCW/nWo roster, and true to the game's title, WCW vs. the World also features several "fictional" foreign wrestlers. These performers are actually rebranded counterparts of real Japanese wrestlers who could not be properly represented in the American version of the game due to copyright restrictions. This practice of adapting Japanese performers for American games would continue with two more AKI games for the Nintendo 64. Manufacturer's Description: Hot wrestling action!
