In the not-too-distant future, one artificial intelligence has overtaken all other intelligences and their governments. Societies have migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected by a single neural network that constantly improves people's experiences through the processing of personal data.
Nathan, an outsider who still refuses to comply with the new order, lives off the grid as a smuggler of modified hardware and cracked software. Equipped with his custom headset, he is one of the few still able to shut down the AVR and see reality as it truly is.
He shares a city apartment with his girlfriend, Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have been spraying techno-colors throughout the city's augmented space.
Waking up one day, Nathan discovers that Jay has disappeared during the night, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror.
After accidentally breaking his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon finds himself entangled in an unexpected journey involving Jay's hacker group and a syndicate of AVR techies.
