Developed by a single player since December 2015, Underponder is a first-person puzzle-platformer with an eerie and terrifying atmosphere, evoking feelings of loss and loneliness while wandering through a strange "mindset" known only as The Underponder. With
no visual user interface, the player crawls through different levels looking for clues on how to progress. At the end of each map, a cinematic plays. These cinematics advance the story, slowly unraveling the mystery. In addition to a familiar key setup that every FPS player in the world knows, the game comes with some unique hearing-based mechanics. The character has the ability to "close their eyes" and focus on their surroundings without seeing. While concentrating, some things will happen, while others may not. For example, certain sounds can only be heard when the eyes are closed.
With no enemies to contend with, the game focuses on eerie puzzles, atmosphere, and the main story. As an homage to all the games the developer was making in the 90s, the game is mysterious and at times brutal. "Instant Death" is the most common type of danger, and requires some skill and patience to complete the game without a complete mental breakdown.
