Information:
The game begins with treasure hunter Nathan Drake (Nate) retrieving the coffin of explorer Sir Francis Drake (his pseudo-grandfather), which was buried at the bottom of the ocean 400 years ago (1587). He has inherited a ring with the expedition's engraved coordinates. The expedition is funded by journalist Elena Fisher, Nate's fiancée, who is there to record a documentary about the expedition's events to find what Francis Drake was seeking.
Nate and Elena escape and find themselves in an abandoned German bunker. Upon venturing to the base, Nate discovers that the Germans sought the statue during World War II, but like the Spanish before them, they became cursed by the statue, causing them to mutate. Sir Francis, aware of the statue's power, attempted to keep it on the island by destroying ships and sinking the city, before being killed by the mutated humans.
