The game takes place in 2015, two years after the events of Resident Evil 6, and 12 years after the final collapse of the Umbrella Corporation, whose research was sold on the black market. Despite the fact that Umbrella no longer exists, its echoes are still felt. Several corporations are eager to seize what was once Umbrella's and are recruiting mercenaries to search for lost secrets. Bioterrorism becomes a global threat. In contaminated areas, mercenaries will have to confront not only dangerous mutants, but also hostile rival teams.
In the single-player mode "The Experiment," the protagonist is mercenary 3A-7. He carries out the orders of the organization's leading scientist, Abraham Jackson. After Jackson's mysterious disappearance, Beatrice Bertrand takes his place.
