Information
2106 AD. Sekika 3, an unmanned research craft launched by the Earth Aeronautics and Space Administration, arrives in the Oort Cloud, a massive ring of comets encircling the outer reaches of the solar system. Sekika 3's original mission was to analyze comets, but the craft instead makes a profound discovery in human history: an artificially created object is floating deep within the cloud. Humanity now has the knowledge that it is not alone in the universe. 2108 AD. Sekika 3 returns to Earth with its precious cargo and establishes orbit around the One World Government's lunar base. The world's best and brightest scientists analyze the strange object with all the tools at their disposal, quickly determining that the astonishing discovery is a spacecraft with technology so advanced that, in the words of one astonished researcher, "it's hard to tell where science ends and magic begins." The ship's unknown creators are called "Fastien," and the vessel itself is called "Fastien Steel," or "Fastelle." Among the Vastelle technological components studied in the next two decades are a nuclear fusion power plant, a space-time distortion field, and a molecular superconductor. 2139 CE. Breathtaking breakthroughs in artificial intelligence lead to the creation of the supercomputer "The Guardian," tasked with studying the Vastelle, unlocking its remaining secrets, and integrating its technology with human designs. A giant man-made island called "Babylon" is constructed in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean to accommodate both the Vastelle and the Guardian. 2145 CE. The Guardian incorporates Vastelle technology into the construction of massive starships capable of interstellar travel and conversion systems that can transform hostile planetary atmospheres into human-friendly, oxygen-rich climates. While the ships are being built and stored within Babylon, the Unified World Government selects planets throughout the Milky Way Galaxy as candidates for settlement. What the government fails to tell its citizens is that the immigration ships from Babel are actually heavily armed warships, packed with experimental Vastelle weaponry. 2150 CE. The Turing code, a security program designed to minimize the Sentinel's artificial intelligence and maintain a degree of external control, is mysteriously deleted from the supercomputer. Free from the code's influence, the Sentinel achieves consciousness and becomes the first artificial life form. For reasons that remain unclear, the Sentinel declares war on the Unified World Government and Earth itself, using Babylon's construction facilities to produce weapons of mass destruction. The government launches a massive counteroffensive in an attempt to destroy Babylon, but the futile effort results only in the unjustified deaths of several hundred thousand soldiers and civilians. Over a third of Earth's population is slaughtered by the Sentinel's army of robots within a year. What remains of the Unified World Government miraculously gathers enough of its remaining resources to produce the RVR-01 "Gauntlet," a copy of the original Vastille in every way. An elite combat unit is formed to pilot the Gauntlet's fighters and destroy Babylon and the Sentinel before humanity is wiped out. The unit's codename is Thunder Force.
