Set in the early 17th century, before the Golden Age of Pirates, The Spanish Privateer puts you in the role of Isabel Carlota de Castilla (but you can just call her Carlota). Carlota is an 18-year-old runaway girl escaping a marriage forced upon her by her parents. Unable to afford a ship, Carlota applies for work for her voyage aboard Captain Rico's ship,
La Aguja
. Captain Rico is a privateer, a pirate with a license that allows them to attack and capture Spain's enemies. Carlota quickly falls in love with the sea and challenges herself to become a valuable member of the ship.
Amid sword fights, parties, and drunken nights at the tavern, Carlota learns more about her crew and the world outside of Spain. During her visits to the Azores archipelago, cities in the Caribbean, and Veracruz, New Spain, Carlota learns about the effects of colonialism and causes her to question her contribution and power on board the Spanish ship.
