, revenge, love, and comradeship—all these elements are intertwined in Konami's 2D epic, Suikoden. You take on the role of a young boy whose father, Theo McDowell, is a prominent general of the Crimson Moon Empire. The protagonist, your character, is going through maturation and the trials and tribulations of being the son of an honored general. After Theo leaves for the North on official business, your character has to take care of everything in his absence. The hero joins the Imperial Guard but realizes that things are not as they seem—there are very shady dealings and characters. Rebelliously, you take the advice of a woman named Odessa and join the Liberation Army, a group of disparate individuals determined to overthrow the Imperial Guard. In Suikoden, you are presented with a vast world to explore, many puzzles to solve, and many fights to undertake. As you travel to different cities, you will meet adventurers who want to join the fight. There are a total of 108 companions (Stars of Destiny) to find and recruit, though you can only have a few in your party at a time. Some are actually required to progress in the game, and some exist solely for the cause at hand. You'll also encounter 27 Runes of Right, mysterious stones that grant the wielder great power and ability. Among the various runes are the Slayer Rune, which doubles your chances of performing a critical hit; the Hatred Rune, which fires a scorching fire projectile; and the Dragon Rune, which allows dragons to coexist with humans. Nearly every one of these is essential to find. In addition to regular party battles (against a host of monsters and evil enemies), you'll participate in one-on-one duels and all-out wars, a conflict against the Liberation Army and the Imperial Guard. When fighting in one of these battles, every Star of Destiny you've found so far will emerge and fight for you. Each character is grouped together, and when they attack, they sit out the rest of the battle until the end of the turn. Things play out this way until either the Liberation Army or the Imperial Guard are defeated.
