Sensing that an apocalyptic war was imminent, the United Nations implemented a last-ditch plan to save what could be saved of the human race. Two craft were launched: a massive colony ship called the Hephaestus and a smaller, faster exploration vessel called the Hermes. The destination was a recently discovered Earth-like planet potentially harboring life located about 18 light-years away. The Hermes arrived at the planet first to establish a presence while awaiting the Hephaestus's arrival.
Four years later, as the Hephaestus approached its destination, a faint signal was detected from a nearby asteroid. Despite their better judgment, the crew of the Hephaestus decided to investigate, and in doing so, set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately lead to their destruction.
The good news is that you managed to survive by seizing a small escape vehicle in time. The bad news is that everyone you knew and loved is dead, and you have nothing but the clothes on your back, a standard multi-function laser on your wrist, and a malfunctioning AI companion named AGIS. Oh, and the human race is probably doomed. Minimum
