Visiting Rome from Chicago, where he works as a doctor, former priest James Murphy answers a mysterious call for help from his friend Cristoforo. The disappearance of a briefcase containing embarrassing documents is enough to convince James that his friend is the victim of something suspicious and sinister. The Vatican's involvement and some eerie parallels with his own traumatic past inspire James to get to the bottom of this mystery.
Along this dangerous and disturbing path, James finds an unlikely travel companion who will challenge his deepest beliefs. Thus, the two characters begin a physical journey in search of truth, and a metaphysical exploration of the inner soul and the darkest secrets that everyone, even a "hero of the faith" like James, keeps hidden.
Rome is the stage for this adventure – a city bathed in eternal twilight, its skies colored by the blood spilled in over thirty years of intrigue: the blood of the innocent and the guilty, the anonymous and the famous victims alike.
