We all know that the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 led to Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. But what would have happened if the Manhattan Project had failed or experienced delays that made it difficult to prepare the bombs in time?
Operation Downfall was the code name for the Allied plan to invade Japan's home islands. The operation consisted of two parts: Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. Olympic was scheduled to begin in November 1945 and aimed to capture the southern third of Japan's largest island, Kyushu, using the recently captured island of Okinawa as a staging area. In early 1946, it was to be followed by Operation Coronet, the planned invasion of the Kantō Plain, near Tokyo, on Japan's main island of Honshu. Airbases on Kyushu captured in Olympic, and possibly other areas on nearby Shikoku, would provide air support for Coronet. If Operation Downfall had gone ahead, it would have been the largest land operation in history.Minimum
