It's an open-source MMO RTS for programming enthusiasts, where the core mechanic is programming the AI of your units. With all the trappings of a full-fledged strategy game, you control your colony by writing real JavaScript running around the clock in a persistent world filled with other players at your level.
Your colony can gather resources, build units, conquer territory, and trade with other colonies. As you conquer more territory, your power in the game world grows, as does your ability to expand your domain. But beware, having multiple players aiming for the same territory can lead to conflict!
Screeps was developed for people with programming skills. Unlike some other RTS games, your units in Screeps can react to events without your input—provided you've programmed them correctly. And unlike other MMOs, you don't need to play Screeps constantly to play well. It's enough to check in occasionally to see if everything is progressing properly. Minimum
