When Carrie-Anne was born, the doctors told us we were having a very special girl. We didn't really know what that meant, only that it seemed to involve sending her to "special schools" because she couldn't handle being in a regular school. So we sent her to the newly opened St. Mary's Boarding School for Gifted Children. She seemed happy there. She even made a friend named Ava. I didn't like her, though. Ava would tell Carrie-Anne stories, upsetting stories, about things her parents and other people had apparently done to her. I told Carrie-Anne to stay away from her, but I don't think she ever listened.
One day, Carrie-Anne called to say that some students had disappeared. We talked to the teachers, but they said it was just a story: a made-up urban legend. We tried talking to some other parents, but no one seemed to be talking about it. Not long after, the school closed. "Structurally unsafe," they said. Ah, if I'd known then what I know now.Minimum
