Information:
While taking a morning stroll on a foggy beach, introverted writer Cora encounters a young girl. She looks soaking wet, down on her luck, and completely broken, and Cora quickly concludes that she must be a runaway.
Despite her attempts, Cora is unable to learn much about the girl or her circumstances. She doesn't know why the girl ran away from home, or even what her name is, but that doesn't deter her.
Cora quickly offers the girl a place to stay, and the homeless girl has no choice but to accept.
The girl moves in with Cora, sleeping in her dingy guest room with old furniture and a thin, hard bed. Cora buys the girl new clothes and showers her with mystery novels, all the while trying to figure out her true identity.
