Description: The events of "Defiance" directly follow the end of "Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2." Cain's motivations become clearer in this installment. In particular, he cast Raziel into the Abyss because he knew Raziel would not die, but would return with free will. Kain staked everything on Raziel, knowing that only he could help him reclaim his true destiny as the Heir of Balance, the mysterious savior of Nosgoth, about whom very little is known, except that he must return the Pillars to the ancient vampires.
Raziel, having learned a terrible secret at the end of Soul Reaver 2, tries with all his might to avoid his terrible fate—to become an eternally hungry wraith imprisoned in the Reaver. And
to this end, he will stop at nothing. Eventually, Raziel purifies his sword (his soul, weaponized after centuries of imprisonment in the Reaver) with the help of the spirit and realizes that he will never escape his destiny. No matter what he does, his every move is controlled by the Elder God. After considering everything, Raziel makes the one decision the Elder God least expected. He submits to his fate, sacrifices himself, and enters the Reaver after distributing his purified weapon to Kain, thus curing him of Napraptor's madness and allowing Kain to take his place as Guardian of the Scales and restore his true destiny. In addition, he reveals to Cain that the true enemy all along was the Elder God. Seeing him after the purification, Cain defeats the monster but does not kill it. Apparently, this is due to the fact that it was only a part of his body or simply due to a lack of time (the Elder God collapsed the chamber to stop the battle).
