The War of the Pacific broke out as a result of a dispute between Chile and its British ally, versus Peru and its American ally, over control of the nitrate-rich coastal region of the Atacama Desert. The Atacama had long been a difficult area to conquer and occupy. It was almost devoid of water and had few roads or railways. From the outset of the war, it became clear that control of the local nitrate resources in this difficult desert region would be the decisive factor. In the November 1879 campaign, the Peruvian Navy lost its two most important warships. The Peruvians raised funds to purchase new warships, cannons, torpedo boats, and other weapons. To maintain their naval superiority, Chile was forced to rearm its warships with new long-barreled rifled cannons. The war continues... Minimum
