on the 1996 blockbuster that launched Will Smith's career into space, Independence Day immerses you in an interstellar war against resource-hungry alien forces. Controlling a skilled fighter pilot and his companion, Steve Hiller, your goal is to destroy a barrage of space defense fighters while targeting massive warships capable of destroying entire cities. Needless to say, this won't be a walk in the park. As a kind of aerial combat simulator, Independence Day features a wide variety of mission objectives and exotic locations. Since the alien forces have gathered in the Grand Canyon, you'll have to destroy four generators that power Terminator City and disable the massive spaceship. The New York mission will have you eliminate the space links used by the aliens as a means of communication. Of course, you'll have to eliminate the main spaceship in that area. At certain times, funnel-shaped wargates appear near Terminator City. By directing your plane into the gate, you'll gain access to one of three bonus levels: Cape Canaveral, Nahkoda Subbase, or Antarctica. Your mission is to destroy a shield generator within a set time limit; if you delay, another War Portal will appear and your mission will end. Each level contains redemption items that provide you with additional aircraft and weapons. Additional aircraft act as an extra life; if you are shot down in the line of duty, you get a second chance with another aircraft. Your default fighter is the F/A 18 Hornet with devastating AIM-120 Amraam missiles. Other weapons include rearming missiles, beam weapons that emit from your aircraft for a limited time, "Tumblers" that send the opposition into a tailspin, and EPM missiles that cause stalling. There are also health items and time extenders at your disposal. Independence Day also features multiplayer options, including Head-to-Head and Cable Link modes. Head-to-Head is a split-screen deathmatch with a set kill limit; whoever reaches this limit first wins. For those with the right cables and two controllers, Cable Link mode is just like Head-to-Head, but the action is performed on two TV screens.
