Centuries before Caesar, Alexander, or Philip, the wooded hills and rocky coasts of ancient Italy attracted cultures from across the Mediterranean with promises of wealth and prosperity. Bronze-clad warriors from the powerful Greek cities set out across the Adriatic Sea to establish Hellenistic beachheads among the native Italian mountain tribes, while bands of Gallic archers trek south across the Alps in search of fertile new lands. On the swampy banks of the Tiber, a fledgling city-state called Rome struggles for independence from the existing Etruscan confederation.
