Marcel is the illegitimate son of the famous actor Georges de Saint-Rémy, a renowned professional entertainer on the stage, and a notorious courtier with a penchant for sleeping with other men's wives. Due to his father's poor reputation and shy, sociable demeanor, Marcel is relentlessly bullied by the other boys at his Parisian school, who seem intent on making his life miserable. In
the early autumn of 1896, Marcel's father implicates the thief in a particularly lurid scandal, which is widely reported in the tabloids of Paris and beyond.
Fearing for her daughter's health and desperate to give him a break from their family's constant drama, the long-agonized mother removes Marcel from his school, choosing instead to send him to her older sister's in Maine, in the heart of rural France. There is a catch to this seemingly innocent plan, however. Marcel's powerful aunt, Albertine, owns an all-girls institution that has never admitted any male students before.
