All the creatures in the trailer evolved on their own in the game; none of them were manually edited! The virtual creatures evolve on their own to adapt to the environment they create
. At the heart of the ecosystem are the evolved virtual organisms, grown from synthetic DNA and living in a physically simulated environment. This synthetic DNA encodes everything about the creature, from its skeleton to its skin, from its joint types to its mental processes. A creature's genetic code can be mutated, combined, cut with other species, and modified directly by the player.
Creatures' nervous systems evolve alongside their bodies.
Creatures' brains are also encoded in their DNA and undergo evolution. The neurology of the virtual organism is a computational tube where data from the sensory organs is passed through a network of neurons and finally activates a muscle in a specific body part.
Movement is constrained by the fish's
swimming laws; creatures don't just run animations. They move like real sea creatures, applying torque to their joints to push against the water in a coordinated way to propel themselves forward. Working within this physical simulation, evolution can produce a huge variety of body shapes and swimming styles.
