The
Cotton series is a line of shoot 'em up video games developed by Success with a long history of releases in arcades and on home video game consoles. Debuting in 1991, the Cotton games helped establish the visual style of shoot 'em ups, sometimes called cute 'em ups. Instead of the warships and battlefields typical of most shoot 'em ups, the Cotton games put players in control of a broomstick-riding witch and task them with fighting through magical, haunted kingdoms. Cotton games have appeared on a variety of consoles, including the NEC PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, Super Nintendo, Mega Drive/Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Dreamcast. There is also a bakenko game featuring Cotton available for the PlayStation 2. Most recently, Cotton appears as a hidden character in the Nintendo DS game Rondo of Swords. Each Cotton game features a unique storyline loosely tied to the other games in the series. All of these stories revolve around a young witch named Cotton's obsession with a magical candy called "Willow." In a typical Cotton game, Cotton would begin her journey through the game's stages hoping to be rewarded with Willow at the end. However, when the game ends, she almost always ends up empty-handed. The character Cotton is always very childish. The funny scenes she appears in have endeared her to Japanese anime fans. Marchen Adventure Cotton 100% was released for the Super Famicom in early 1994. It can best be described as a kind of reinterpretation of the original Cotton game—the animation and enemy behaviors, gameplay mechanics, some stages and bosses, and the plot itself are almost identical to the first game. However, in addition to many unique stages and enemies, the theme and colors in Marchen Adventure Cotton 100% are brighter, and the actual level map is significantly different from the first game. Marchen Adventure Cotton 100% also came with a free mini-soundtrack disc containing music and dialogue based on the game. In 2003, the PlayStation received a direct version of the game simply called Cotton 100%. However, it did not come with the mini disc. Manufacturer's Description: Set in a magical world, this horizontal shooter will destroy the enemy with bullets and magic. I can choose my favorite from four sets of magic. Cotton, the witch who is searching for her favorite Willow, has been described as a villain in fantasy threads and has offered help before. Can she truly escape the charge against her? Features: Third-person perspective. 2D graphics. Cartoon graphics. Fantasy and magical themes.
