Ar Tonelico takes place in the world of Sol Ciel, a small world consisting only of a tower and a floating continent. This small world is isolated by the Sea of Death below and a deadly Plasma Sea above. The game also features a rare group of people called the Reyvateil, who, through the power of Song, can speak with the world and cast powerful magic. However, to cast more powerful magic, they must inject a harmful substance called Grathnode into their bodies, through an act called Install. Because Install is a very painful experience for Reyvateils, they only allow people they truly trust to do it. The story focuses on Lyner Barsett, an eighteen-year-old whose mother rules Platina, a city located on the upper floors of the tower. Lyner has no interest in politics, instead seeking adventure in the military. However, when a strange virus appears and they are unable to defeat it, Lyner is tasked with descending to the floating continent and retrieving a mysterious artifact to defeat the virus.
