Information
After losing his memory, V Fong Wong found himself in the small town of Lahan. Because he couldn't remember who he really was or where he came from, he decided to stay there and teach martial arts and painting—one of his personal hobbies. After his arrival, he befriended various townspeople, who in turn treated him like family. However, what had happened to him in the past bothered him; he feared that it would come back to haunt him one day. And it did. One day, an organization that controlled massive machines, mechanical robots designed for war purposes, came to the small town of Lahan. He was the center of attention and without hesitation, he jumped into a nearby machine and began fighting. The villagers were scared to death as he began destroying the threatening enemies; he also helped destroy the town. Angered by the way he had acted, he banished the townspeople into exile, his only friend being an inventor named Seitan. Little did he know, V's adventure was just beginning. As the hero, you will travel the world in search of friends and allies to join your cause, discover who is behind the organization that destroyed Lahan, and discover their connection to you and your past. Squaresoft's role-playing game, Xenogears, documents all of this, as well as the struggle between man and machine and the destruction of a god. Due to its religious undertones, the game faced a torrent of controversy from local importers and translators. It was finally given the green light for an American translation and ended up being hailed as one of the best role-playing games of 1998. Some characters will join your party, while others remain with you throughout the game; you can play a maximum of three characters at a time (similar to Final Fantasy VII). Each character has their own reason for helping you, with a full history of why they want to overthrow the empire. This is documented in individual character development. Unlike most RPGs from this company, there are two different combat systems. The first is called Character Combat, which plays exactly as it sounds. Your characters have unique combos and special attack abilities. To use these, you'll have to pay attention to their individual Character Points. Depending on which button you press, the number of action points will be used in that round—the more points, the stronger the attack. As your characters advance in skill and level up, they will be granted more powerful abilities. The other system plays a bit like character combat with a twist. At certain times, you'll have to engage in combat with your Machines. Each Machine has a set amount of fuel that can be used in battle (items can be purchased to replenish the amount), and it functions like action points. Certain moves require a set amount of fuel to perform, and character combos work with Machines, though their power is greatly amplified. In towns, you can purchase various supplies, such as health items, stronger swords and weapons, and heavier armor for protection. Additionally, some towns are Machine-friendly and have stations where you can upgrade. While sometimes quite costly, you can improve a Machine's engine, replace the engine, increase the amount of fuel, purchase new and advanced weapons, and replace armor for greater protection. "Xenogears" takes place over two discs and features over 20 minutes of original Japanese animation to aid the story's progression at key moments. Each city is designed in 3D and features a camera system that allows you to rotate and zoom around your character to get the best possible view. It's probably one of the best games on consoles.
