Windward was designed from the outset to be a fully cooperative, action-based game, playable alone or with friends. Start by creating a procedural world that will be unique to you, then set sail fighting pirates, trading with cities, completing quests, or simply exploring—it's up to you how you play.
As you sail, you'll find resources you can exploit, upgrades for your ships, and new cities that will seek your help. As you progress farther from the starting area, you'll encounter different pirates who will try to take what is rightfully yours. Your combat experience will allow you to unlock new talents and abilities to make this kind of work easier.
As you take on cargoes with cities and meet their production gaps, cities will grow, providing more quests, more resources, and better items. As cities continue to grow, you'll be presented with the option to upgrade your ship itself. Would you prefer a speedboat to explore the world, or a heavy galleon capable of handling five cargoes at once? Or perhaps a massive ship of the line to confront pirates in their own territory?
As you explore the world and move further away from the starting area, the game will gradually become more challenging—but so will the rewards. Throughout all of this, you can expect the pirates to put up a fair fight, as the AI is bound by the same rules as the player: they have vision and must explore the map before they know what's out there.
Speaking of AI, build a fearsome reputation and the AI will respect you, even fear you—avoiding you if possible. Some friendly AIs will even choose to follow you and help you on your own adventures.
