Whakamarina Canyon
, New Zealand is a short exploration/photography experience set near Queen Charlotte Sound on New Zealand's South Island. Use the in-game camera to observe and interact with the world around you as you explore and complete photo-related objectives. The game places a significant emphasis on immersion and not being helpful; your attention and enthusiasm for exploration will be rewarded with access to hidden areas and new features. The game also includes a custom immersive camera; this is definitely one to dim the lights and put on your headphones.
This project began as a showcase for my environment design work; I wanted to create a realistic and dense forest landscape using photo-realistic 3D assets that could run smoothly in real time. The environment was created in Unreal Engine 4 with heavy reference to on-site photography. You'll encounter rock outcroppings, dense forest trails, expansive farmland, and distant hills, many of which closely resemble the appearance of real canyons in New Zealand. As I spent more time on this, I began building in some camera mechanics that I thought would add a unique/personal level of interactivity to the experience. I hope the atmosphere and ambiance created by the environment will keep you coming back when you're feeling stressed.
Some additional recommendations:
- Customize the audio visualization! Feel free to turn off the in-game music and play your own music in the background.
- The VR version is a great way to immerse yourself in the world, but I still recommend the desktop version as the best way to experience the game.
- Please try to avoid searching for online guides if you're feeling overwhelmed. You'll often need just a few extra minutes to discover what you're looking for.
Thank you so much for your support! I'll be in the discussions section as much as possible to listen to feedback and talk about potential new features. Minimum
