Tobal No. 1 is a fighting game for the PlayStation developed by DreamFactory and published by Square in 1996. The game was DreamFactory's debut, as well as Square's first release on a CD-ROM-based console. Tobal No. 1 is considered Square's entry into the fighting game genre, although a quest-like adventure mode is included. The game mechanics were designed with the help of fighting game designer Seiichi Ishii, while all characters were designed by Akira Toriyama, known for his Dragon Ball characters. A sequel, Tobal 2, was not released in North America or Europe. A demo disc was included with both the North American and Japanese versions of the game, containing a preview demo of Final Fantasy VII and video previews of Final Fantasy Tactics, Bushido Blade, and SaGa Frontier. Plot: Tobal No. 1 takes place in the year 2027 on a fictional planet called Tobal, which contains large deposits of Molmoran, an ore that can be used as an energy source. The 98th Tournament is being held on the planet to determine who has the rights to extract the ore. Several humans and aliens are vying for the title. The game's plot and character backgrounds are only explored in the instruction manual. All eight playable characters initially have the same ending. Immediately playable characters include Chuji Wu, Olympus, Epon, Hom, Fei Pusu, Mary Ivonskaya, Il Goga, and Gren Kutz. Bosses include Nork, Mufu, and Emperor Udan. All bosses can be unlocked after defeating them in Dungeon Mode except Nork. Alternatively, the game allows the player to choose Snork (Little Nork), a small version of the very large character. There is also one secret fighter named Toriyama Robo (named after Akira Toriyama) who can be unlocked if the player completes the 30-story Udan Dungeon level in Quest Mode. Toriyama Robo does not appear at any point in the game except at the end of the dungeon. Gameplay: Tobal No. Tobal No. 1 features various game modes, including a tournament mode, player vs. player mode, training mode, and a unique quest mode, all of which utilize the same combat system. The game runs smoothly at 60 frames per second due to the absence of textured polygons and reduced detail, giving the game a distinct look compared to other fighting games of the time, such as Tekken 2. The game's controls are unique, allowing for complete freedom of movement in the ring as long as the player is facing the opponent. The player can dash and jump, and specific buttons execute high, medium, and low attacks for each character. Tobal No. 1 also features an intuitive grappling and blocking system, providing the player with a variety of throws and counters. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Tobal No. 1 is its "Quest Mode," which combines the game's combat controls with 3D dungeon exploration. The player must advance through several floors, encounter traps, and engage in combat with a variety of enemies, including the game's playable characters. Several items can be found, dropped by enemies, or purchased using crystals. These items can be picked up, consumed, or thrown at enemies, and include food items that can restore the player's health points or potions that have a range of effects including increasing the player's maximum health or reducing it to one point. There is no way to save the player's progress, and death means starting over. Defeating certain characters in this mode unlocks them as playable characters in other game modes. Each of the eight initially playable characters can perform high, medium, and low attacks, and the game uses a grappling and blocking system that allows players to perform a variety of throws and counterattacks.
