Description: Sakura Wars is a cross-genre video game set in Tokyo during a fictionalized version of the Taisho period. The player controls protagonist Seijuro Kamiyama and the female members of the Flower Division of the Imperial Combat Revue, who must battle demons while participating in the World Combat Revue Games. Described as a "dramatic 3D action-adventure," the player explores a fully 3D version of Ginza, Tokyo, usually on foot, from a third-person perspective, and speaks to various characters to trigger main story events and side objectives. As in Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, the world of Sakura Wars is displayed to a large scale relative to the characters within it; instead of a caricature of a character wandering around minimaps as seen in previous Sakura Wars games, each area is displayed proportionally. One form of Cinematron, called the Teletron, is a smartphone that allows Kamiyama to see the map of Ginza and talk to other characters.
As with previous titles, gameplay is divided into adventure segments in which Kamiyama explores Ginza and talks to characters; and combat segments. One returning gameplay element is the traditional "Living and Interactive Picture System" (LIPS); during conversations, the player is presented with several choices over a period of time. The answer the player chooses directly affects Kamiyama's relationship with the main characters and influences their subsequent actions in battle segments; Kamiyama's responses also affect minor non-player characters (NPCs). A distinct version in this game is called "Analog LIPS," where the player can move the camera and highlight objects or people to trigger more dialogue. In individual conversation segments, the player can hover the cursor over background elements or characters to trigger internal monologues and various character responses. Players can save their game automatically at the beginning of the adventure and combat portions of each chapter, as well as manually during breaks and during exploration, which also includes the states of the main characters as well as supporting NPCs.
Sakura Wars is the first game in the main Sakura Wars series to feature an action-based combat system. Instead of using a menu interface, the player selects commands directly linked to the controller buttons. World Combat Revue Games can be played over a maximum of three rounds. The player can select up to two characters to assist Kamiyama in matches. During combat, each character has health points (HP) and magic points (MP). HP is depleted whenever a character is attacked. The game ends when all characters reach zero, although the player can continue from the start of the battle or from the last checkpoint.
