The year
is 2030. Business is going on as usual in the isolated research city of Rukumi—until several explosions suddenly erupt at the nuclear research facility known as “LABO.” The city dispatches “Sirius,” an elite rescue squad, to deal with the situation. But the situation worsens when LABO’s nuclear reactor melts down, shutting down the facility—with members of Sirius and the survivors trapped inside. With deadly radiation leaking everywhere and not enough anti-radiation drugs until the shutdown is lifted, the survivors make increasingly grim discoveries. In their struggle for survival, in a death trap filled with fire and radiation, they learn that doubt is their greatest enemy, and trust is their greatest asset. The story of Root Double features two different main characters: Watashi Kasasagi, the rescue squad leader who lost his memory in the hours following the accident, and Na Tsuhiko Tenkawa, a student who has been gathering clues for the previous six days. The only key to survival lies in the player’s hands with the Senses Empathy System (SSS). Unlike traditional visual novels, Root Double has no clear "choices." Instead, the game uses SSS to allow the player to manipulate the story based solely on emotion. Your reflected emotions toward the characters, particularly your trust in them, shape the story's progression. Only by effectively utilizing this system and completing the two main characters' stories can the player piece together the truth and hope to discover a way out of the facility.
