Mortal
Kombat 3 (MK3) is a fighting game developed by Midway Games and first released in arcades in 1995 as the third installment in the Mortal Kombat series. As in previous games, the game features a cast of characters that players select and command through a series of battles against other opponents. The game eschews the tournament storyline of previous games, with warriors battling against Shao Kahn, who has revived his bride Sindel and begun his invasion of Earthworld.
The third installment of Mortal Kombat retains the series' signature blood and gore. It introduces new types of finishing moves, including Animal Strikes. New to the series are combination moves, pre-determined sequences used to execute a series of consecutive attacks. A "sprint" button was also added, allowing players to dash toward an opponent for a short period, as well as "fight tokens," an unlockable content system that uses various tokens that can be entered before players' matches to achieve certain effects.
Some characters from previous games have returned, and new characters have been introduced to the series. It's worth noting that Mortal Kombat 3 excluded popular characters from previous games, some of whom were added in an update, Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate, released later in 1995. The 1996 PC and home console exclusive Mortal Kombat Trilogy added more characters, as well as other new features.
