Legions of Ashworld is a turn-based war game that adds a sense of adventure to strategy war games by being presented from a first-person perspective in an open world environment. The game takes place in an ancient fantasy world of kings, sorcerers, and fearsome creatures. When a powerful empire invades human-ruled lands, all the kingdoms are engulfed in a great conflict. The player's task is to organize opposition to the invading forces, unite the kingdoms into an alliance, and ultimately restore the war to the invaders.
As the various characters encountered across Ashworld are recruited to the player's cause, the player can then move them through the lands, having them perform a variety of activities, such as hiring mercenaries, purchasing goods and provisions, and attacking opposing forces. The lands of Ashworld contain many interesting locations—particularly noteworthy are the various temples, from those occupied by servants of the Sorcerer Orders offering magical services, to ancient, abandoned ruins where valuable magical items can be found. Outside the lands where humans reside, other races live who could become important allies if they can be persuaded to join the war.
