The world around you isn't real - it's simply a high-quality multi-level simulation. Due to a virus attack on the underlying simulation system, the software was corrupted, and all living things disappeared from the world and were replaced by viral cells that eat away at the remains of matter.
Hope fades by the minute, and higher entities plan to reset the simulation, starting the long process of evolution again. If that happens, the world will never be the same again.
