The game's story revolves around Batman. While patrolling Gotham City one night, Batman discovers Catwoman stealing from a government building and pursues her. He eventually captures her and takes her to Blackgate Penitentiary, where he fights several D.O.O. agents who mistake him for Catwoman's partner along the way. Two weeks later, Captain James Gordon calls Batman to assist with a riot at Blackgate Penitentiary, which was made possible by a mysterious explosion. The inmates took several hostages, and the prison was divided into three main areas, each with three people in charge: Joker , Penguin , and Black Mask. Upon entering the prison, Batman encounters Catwoman, who informs him of hostages being held within the maximum-security area of the prison, known as the Arkham Wing. At this point, Batman may choose to pursue any of the three crime bosses; before departing, Catwoman also informs him that the Joker has cut off the wing's air supply, leaving the hostages with minimal air. On his way to the Joker, Batman encounters Warden Martin Joseph, whose office is rigged with bombs. While attempting to free Warden Martin Joseph, Batman is attacked by Deadshot, who has been separately assigned by all three crime bosses to kill him. After defeating Deadshot, Batman rescues Warden Martin Joseph, who reports that the Joker is in his office.Batman eventually defeats the Joker, while obtaining the codes needed to unlock a puzzle set to release the hostages. Before leaving, he notes that the air supply has not been cut off as Catwoman stated. On his way to Penguin, he encounters Batman again.Catwoman tells him about a fighting tournament hosted by the Penguin. There, Batman is forced to fight the Bronze Penguin Champion, who is initially reluctant to fight. After defeating the Bronze Tiger, the Penguins attack Batman, but he is saved by the Bronze Tiger, who holds them off long enough for Batman to pursue the fleeing Penguin , ultimately defeating him. On his way to Black Mask, Batman learns that he is attempting to overload Blackgate's power generators and also cause a chain reaction that will destroy his rivals. Making his way through the sewers, he encounters Solomon Groundy , who defeats him, before finally confronting Black Mask , who knocks him unconscious. Batman merely expels him, thus foiling Black Mask's evil plan. After defeating the Joker , Penguin , and Black Mask, Batman is able to enter Arkham Wing, where the hostages are being held. However, upon arrival, he finds only a weakened Bane. Catwoman then appears and reveals that she lied about the hostages so that Batman could help her reach Bane, who has been assigned a job to restore her health and vitality. Catwoman then attempts to escape, but Batman pursues her to the docks and defeats her. Before he can learn the identity of her employer, a SWAT team led by Captain Rick Flag arrives to arrest her. As they leave with her, Batman flies off into the night, suspicious of the team's actions. The end of the game depends on which leader is defeated last:The Joker is then found by several Blackgate guards, whom he presumably kills before taking one of their uniforms and fleeing the scene. Penguin, who is revealed to be running his illegal operations from within the prison, is freed by a corrupt prison guard whom he bribed and then killed with his umbrella for his rudeness to them, before leaving the scene. Black Mask is also found by some Blackgate guards , who are still unconscious, before he awakens and takes one of them hostage, while the Joker demands that he be handed over to him. He flees the scene after one of the guards accidentally shoots him, which misses him, hitting a pipe and exploding in his face.Black Mask, causing him to scream in pain. Throughout the game, Amanda Waller is seen observing the events of the breakout alongside Captain Rick Flag in a post-credits scene, where it is revealed that Amanda Waller was the one who hired Catwoman to kill the helpless Bane from Blackgate Prison. As per Amanda Waller's orders , Catwoman was released , but she did not complete her main mission, and Team Flag had to return Bane to custody. It is revealed that Amanda Waller had captured Deadshot and Bronze Tiger in the aftermath of the riot, stating that she saw their potential as soldiers, as opposed to degenerates, and intended to take them onto her team. As her helicopter flies away from Blackgate Prison, someone is seen tailing Batman.
