Plants vs. Zombies
is the most popular arcade game on Android, developed and published by PopCap Games for Windows and Mac OS X in 2009. The game was released on May 5, 2009, and became available on Steam the same day. Also on February 14, 2010, a simplified version of the game was released for all generations of the iPhone and iPod touch, and it appeared on Android shortly after.
The player defends their home from zombie attacks by planting various plants on the lawn next to the house. Growing plants requires a certain amount of the "sun" resource, which is produced by special types of plants and also falls from the sky during daylight hours. Other plants are used to attack certain types of zombies , slow the enemy's advance, and for other purposes. Zombie types vary in movement speed, ability to bypass various obstacles, and protection against certain types of attacks. The main game mode takes place in three locations: on the lawn in front of the house, in the backyard, and on the roof of the house. The backyard contains a pond where additional plant species can grow. The roof is sloping to prevent the use of straight-shooting plants on the roof's slope. Additionally, events can occur during the day and at night, as well as in fog, which affects the set of plants available for use.
